Success!

So, I have spent a long time away from my sketchbook and photoshop.

But now I am finished with my gaming binge, and yesterday I recieved my first letter from The Animation Workshop telling me that I am invited to come to the test and interview on the 14th of August! This is great news. :) It's nice to be finally recognized by an institution of higher learning. Hopefully I can impress them come April 14th!

I should be posting new work soon, I just really needed some time to wind down after the portfolio. Now, however, my mind is full of space ships and such from my latest gaming spree. It's nice that I will be able to draw what I want for a while.

See you soon!

Recovery and the Reapers

So the portfolio is in and the paperwork is done, as it has been for several days. I have been recovering with lots of sleeping, lots of drinking and lots of Mass Effect 2.

Hence my fanart, based on this piece by Matt Rhodes:

I absolutely LOVE Matt Rhode's style of working. He is definitely one of my favourite concept artists at the moment, namely due to his clean lineart and colouring, and his apparent obsession with DnD-like fantasy artwork. Anyways, I am trying to finish Mass Effect 2 at the moment so I can get to Mass Effect 3. It is a fantastic game but I am quite impatient, here's hoping Mass Effect 3 lives up to my (very high) expectations.

Sometimes I feel I should start a blog about my thoughts on gaming.

Cheers!

Portfolio COMPLETE!

WOOOOO!

My portfolio is FINALLY finished! The blog is 100% done as far as I'm concerned. :) I may upload a few more croquis drawings and some character sketches in the next day or two, but for the large part it is DONE! Here it is: http://johnmullerportfolio2012.blogspot.com/ !!

This is a seriously exciting time and I am very happy with what I have produced. There is so much room for improvement, but I have learned so much as well, and I am glad that I managed to pull this off. It feels like a real milestone in my fledgeling career as a character artist. :) I also got to learn a lot about the blogger interface, so I will probably pretty this blog up a little when I have some time.

The paperwork has also been sent off, which means that I am basically done. Now comes the hard part: waiting. In the mean time, I think there will probably be some big parties to attend this Thursday (and possibly through the weekend) and lots of videogames to play!

And since I just figured out how to do this, here is an awesome tune from Deadmau5!

The Final Battle Approaches

So, my portfolio is basically finished. :)

I have decided to apply digitally, which means I am now putting together a blog specifically for the purpose of displaying my application portfolio. It's a WIP right now, but hopefully it will be all nice and prettied up by the end of the day. You can view it here: http://johnmullerportfolio2012.blogspot.com/

My freestyle is finished, including a banner I did with lots of extra sketches, and a sweet wizard that I drew quite a while ago. The last remaining piece is a few similar compositions for short life drawings and croquis sketches. :)

It's so incredible to be nearly finished! After this all I have is to fill in some paperwork, and then I will go play lots of videogames for a while. :D

Cheers!

Nearing Completion

So, here is a river troll and a WIP Dilophosaur for my Freestyle section.

My portfolio is nearly 100% complete! I have one perspective drawing left and I need to put everything together in Adobe InDesign, but largely my works are all complete - it's merely a matter of composition now.

Which is good, because the portfolio is due next Thursday! I still need to find a file and a place to print it, but I think I will be done with all the actual work by the end of tomorrow, so I should have plenty of time for that.

Jurassic Park!

So, I just watched Jurassic park, and spat out these dinosars. The DnD equipment is unrelated. Nonetheless, more for freestyle! :D These days I keep finding new ways to do things. Namely, pencil to ink and then photoshop is awesome!

Until next time!

Long Studies!

So, now that I needed a few of my long studies in my portfolio, I actually went and scanned some of my better ones. These are all from the last semester of TDA last year. Enjoy!

Colour!

SO it seems if I have a solid lineart colouring comes fairly quickly to me now.

These are both still a little WIP but I feel like putting them up so hey. :D The Statis Chamber will be my last background. I could probably afford to do some more work on the wall behind the chamber itself, but right now it is 3AM and I am lazy. Likewise I am trying to colour the arcade image with a more watercolour-ey look, but I'm not entirely sure it's working yet. Think I will call it for now though. productive day!

It's All Coming Together

So, I now have my drawings for my last background and my second perspective drawing.

They turned out quite nicely, and now in hindsight I wish I had done a LOT more illustration for the portfolio. I think I lost track of things and battled with mastering photoshop too much, because these two drawings are a lot better than many of the other works I have done so far. That is the luxury of hindsight though, and I have learned to stick to my strengths, ie; illustration.

On Monday we will be expected to present our compiled works to Iben, who is one of the judges at TAW. His insight will be quite valuable I expect, and I will have 5 days with him to polish everything. That means that tomorrow I am FINALLY going to scan my good long studies from TDA, so you will see those posted soon. :D

This has been a real learning experience for me, and funnily enough I think I needed something like this to make drawing more of a habit in my life. Even if I don't get in this year, I am glad I did this.

More Backgrounds, Sir!

So here is my second-to-last background. Frankly I think I bit off a bit more than I could chew with this one, and I had a lot of difficulty (I've repainted it several times now) with it. But it was a learning experience. Hopefully I will have time and energy to go back and polish it up before hand in. For now, it will have to do. I also drew a sort of street urchin as a side project, more for fun, but I think he is cool. :) Enjoy.
