Colour with Joaquim Royo Pt.3

So today marks the end of the colour course, and here is my (near) final image. There's still a bit of polishing to do but for now I have a party to prepare for.

This has been a really interesting and informative week!

Colour with Joaquim Royo Pt.2

So the colour week continues! We were tasked with creating a small colour script using some of the references we had found, and then as a final task we would blow up one of the images and work on it at large.

I made a small script based on an astronaut crash landing on an alien planet, then I had an idea for a Dune piece so I did that on the side, and now that's the piece I will be working on.

I'm going to spend the next two days improving my final piece. Should be fun!

Late Night Sketches

I felt like drawing some space characters after all that fantasy stuff.

Colour with Joaquim Royo

So the Quadruped Project is over and now we are moving on to a week of working with Colour.

The very talented Joaquim Royo is our guide this week and for the first day we've been encouraged to do some colour swatches and some thumbnails. This week is meant to be about experimentation so I think I will try to do a more character and action oriented piece with vivid colours - basically the polar opposite of everything I did in Jahai. Also, IN SPACE.

The colour swatches were all taken from other images that I liked, it's a fun and often surprising exercise to see the range of colours - or even the lack of them - in some of the masterworks. Good stuff.

For the moment Jahai is taking a backseat but I am already itching to get back to designing some characters and gods for it. Those should come in time.

More to come!

Self Study Project - Wrapping Up

I'm supposed to present today so at the moment I am putting together a powerpoint document with all my work. The sheer volume of it kind of surprises me. Despite my three week illness this has been a period where I have produced a very large amount of work. Trying to accurately show it all in 4-5 minutes without being boring will be a challenge.

Jahai finally has a rough title image, and I made my monster designs a little more African in feel.

It's a little bare right now, but it's a start.

My only regret is not having some more detailed character designs, but my shying away from ever completing them might be a sign that environments and monsters are more my thing.

Depending on how the powerpoint presentation goes, I might make a video instead. If so, I'll upload it here within the week.

Self Study Project - Environment Sketches 2.0

So this is the last week I'm going to have any time to work on my self study. I'm currently preparing for a mock presentation tomorrow before the final event this Friday. That means cleaning up my work and making it presentable in some format or another. Today I've been throwing some values into my environment sketches rather than cleaning up my lore doc or drawing characters... I'll get to those eventually.

It's been a great project but there are already a lot of new ideas cropping up here at TAW as we prepare for the Bachelor pitches. This has left me a little tired creatively and I'm looking forward to leaving Jahai for a while so it can simmer. I will definitely return sometime in the future.

Self Study Project - Environment Sketches

So I'm experimenting a bit with style and trying to add a couple more backgrounds to my total before I have to present next week. I decided to go back to sketching and had an absolute blast.

I managed to do these all in a day, which is much faster than I could have painted them. It's definitely a production trick which I need to remember. Later on I might throw some value in these just to spice them up a little. Next up I'm going to do some hero characters, villagers and finally Gods if I have the time. Also need to finish the lore document. But overall things are coming together. Gonna be a busy weekend!

Until next time!

Self Study Project - Weapons

So I have been given a little more time to work on my self study thanks to my lovely classmate, Michelle Tolo, who is handling the comp work I should be doing right now.

Right now I'm focusing on bringing all my work together in a way that makes sense and in which I can present it to another person without 20+ pages of garbled text and imagery. I'm also trying to plug any missing gaps (props, characters etc.) with sketches that I'm cleaning up in Photoshop. So here are some weapons!

Increasingly this project has turned into a Dungeons and Dragons-esque setting over its development. Hopefully I can get some more character and environment sketches done before the final deadline next week Friday.

Self Study Project - Rocky Outlook

This piece is finally done. I tried to be a little more playful with colour than I usually am.

Character and prop sketches are next!

Self Study Project - Monsters

So I'm nearing the end of my time on the self study, for these last weeks I'll be doing a few more paintings and a lot of illustrations for monsters, characters, props etc. to round out the world.

I'm doing this via pencil illustrations that I'm polishing up in Photoshop since this tends to be a bit faster, but in the end I think I discovered that altogether each piece took as long as it might have if I were to paint it anyways. It was also interesting to try and make value studies a little presentable. Anyways, here are some critters:

That was a long one! Next come some characters and props!
