Bachelor Film Inspired Sketching

As I mentioned previously the bachelor films at TAW this year were absolutely fantastic, my favourite being ''The Reward'', a tale of heriosm and friendship clearly inspired by many sessions of Dungeons and Dragons.

I am a huge fan of pen and paper roleplaying like Dungeons and Dragons. As such, after seeing it I was driven to draw some of my own character sketches for this world.

You can see all the bachelor films from this year (including The Reward) and those from many other years on this site: http://vimeo.com/viborganimation/videos

Hopefully in 3 years I will have something just as cool to show you!

Lighting and Still Life Painting

This week we spent two days at Mediaskole here in Viborg learning about traditional lighting techniques, and then went on to spend the last three doing some painting from life, only digitally. Turns out we were a lot better than many of us expected to be, so a pleasant surprise was had by all.

Today was the screening of the bachelor films from the bachelor group that started in 2009 (we call them BAC09). In general they were pretty freakin' awesome and I can only hope I will get to work on something half as cool when my time comes.

For now, it's party weekend as the new graduates go out with a bang, but I am hoping to upload some sketches soon so stay tuned.

Design 2 with Lawrence Marvitt

After a third week with Lawrence my render skills have definitely improved!

We had three tasks this week, first to create an Atlantean weapon. Next to create a scene showing a pirate invasion of Venice. And finally to depict a fairy metropolis - all fully rendered in greyscale while trying to use the design principles he has taught us. As always, it was a great challenge and there is a great deal to learn! Nonetheless I had a blast and I am slowly getting better at rendering. Sadly I could not complete my fairy city piece as I am having some stress related pain in my drawing arm. However I intend to come back and finish it up!

In general I think my renders come out pretty soft, so I hope I can nail down the texturing and get sharper images in the future (something which I began to experiment with in the last piece).

Until next time!

Storyboarding with Niall Laverty

Well, after a short holiday back in South Africa I have returned to wintry Denmark with a tan I can't even show off since I have to wear warm clothes all the time.

Nonetheless, we started our second semester at TAW with full steam and our first week has been an absolute blast. Storyboarding is not something that I thought I would enjoy, but I think it might just be one of my favourite things that I've done here so far. Paying attention to filmic techniques and composition while drawing lots of little frames is great fun and I had a blast working with Lasse on our storyboard, which you can see below.

We also did a lot of gesture drawing this week to try and enhance our poses. We modelled for each other in class which was a nice change to regular croquis drawing. All of these are 1 minute drawings.

All in all an awesome week!
